Article VI: No Religious Test

The United States cannot require that public officials submit to a religious test in order to hold office.

The Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom is a precursor to this prohibition, and the First Amendment’s Establishment and Free Exercise Clauses are additional constitutional protections of religious liberty.

This provision stands in contrast to the English Bill of Rights, which requires the monarch to be Protestant.
