Founders Fellowship Program: July 6 - July 10, 2010
Advanced Educational Program for Early Career Teachers
The Bill of Rights Institute is pleased to announce the launch of our first Washington D.C. -based program for early career teachers. This professional development program will provide 20 teachers selected from 20 states with scholarly lectures, discussions, and tours of historic sites of the Founding in the Washington D.C. area, and is intended to deepen participants' understanding and appreciation of the American Founding.
The Bill of Rights Institute will cover the cost of accommodations, meals, and travel expenses for the program. Program participants will also comprise the Institute's first class of Founders Fellows, and will continue their professional development with the Institute through a variety of activities in the 2010 school year and beyond.
Eligibility
- The program is open to American History, Civics or Government teachers in grades 7-12, in private, public, and homeschools in all 50 states.
- Eligible teachers must have no more than 5 years of full time teaching experience, and have completed no less than one full year of teaching as of June, 2010.
Application Requirements
All application items must be received by the Bill of Rights Institute by March 24, 2010
A complete application consists of the following four items:
1) Submission of biographical information and registration on-line
2) A one-page letter describing candidate's interest in the program, and how it will benefit his/ her students, including a description of plans for teaching in the upcoming school year.
3) A brief resume (two pages maximum)
4) A letter of recommendation from candidate's school principal, department head, district administrator, or home-schooling association president as appropriate. This letter should address the candidate's intellectual curiosity and ability to handle academic rigor, as well as the candidate's skill and promise as a classroom teacher.
Items 2-4 must be mailed to the Institute at the following address, to be received no later than March 24.

Draft Agenda
Pre-conference activities will include readings dealing with the Founding period, as well as mandatory book discussions, both real time and asynchronous.
Expected conference activities include scholar lectures and pedagogical applications every day, along with the following site visits to significant historical landmarks:
Tuesday, July 6 – Participant Arrival and Opening Activities
Wednesday, July 7 -George Washington’s Mount Vernon
Thursday, July 8 - National Archives and George Mason’s Gunston Hall
Friday, July 9 - Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and James Madison’s Montpelier
Saturday, July 10 - Closing Activities and Participant Departure
Post-conference activities will include continuing book studies and online book discussions (one book per semester)
